The Black Swan Public House and Theatre has been named Best Pub for Entertainment at the Great British Pub Awards 2026, bringing national recognition home to North Walsham.
The award was announced in Leeds on Wednesday 23 September. Best Pub for Entertainment was the final category award announced on the night. The volunteer-supported, not-for-profit venue was also a finalist for Best Community Pub.
The recognition comes just weeks before the third anniversary of New Stages Projects CIC taking over the Black Swan. When New Stages took on the pub in October 2023, it faced an uncertain future. Since then, volunteers, staff and supporters have worked hard to transform it into a place where people can enjoy a drink or a meal, watch a show and take part in community life.
Its former stable is now a 100-seat theatre. Theatre shows and classes are just as important to the Black Swan as the pub itself, bringing people together through performances, live music, film, workshops and community events.
There are plenty of reasons to visit beyond a show. The pub serves locally roasted coffee and signature deli sandwiches, while Rudono Pizza makes stone-baked sourdough pizzas on site, which visitors can enjoy in the pub.
Joseph Ballard, Chief Executive of New Stages and landlord of the Black Swan, said:
“When they announced the final category award of the night, we could hardly believe they called our name. Bringing this national award home to North Walsham means so much to us. Everyone has worked so hard to build both the pub and the theatre, and I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve achieved together.
“Our shows and classes matter every bit as much as the pub. They give people a chance to perform, learn, meet others and feel part of something. Thank you to our customers, audiences, volunteers, staff, performers and everyone in the community who has been part of our story so far. This recognition belongs to you too.
“I hope people will come and see what we do—book a show, pop in for a drink or enjoy something to eat. Every visit helps us keep the pub and theatre going.
“I also want to recognise publicans everywhere who are working incredibly hard to keep their doors open. Pubs are part of our culture and the life of our communities. Wherever you live, please support your local pub. Use it, enjoy it and help make sure it’s still there in years to come.”
The Black Swan will celebrate with the community with their monthly night called Friday Night Live, on Friday 25 September from 7.30pm. The free evening in the pub will include karaoke, games and music, and everyone is welcome.
On Saturday 26 September this weekend, the theatre will host A Show for Nepal, a fundraising variety show supporting people affected by the disaster in Nepal. Looking further ahead, tickets are already selling fast for the Black Swan’s Christmas family pantomime, Robin Hood, running from 20 to 29 December. Audiences are encouraged to book early.
